Rough sketches
All photographs on this page were taken by me at the Kyoto venue of the exhibition. I apologize for the sometimes low quality — my phone is old, the lighting was dim, and the original sketches were mostly drawn on old yellowed paper. I hope this page will serve as a resource anyway, since the majority of these sketches have never been seen before and not included in the exhibition catalogue.
This page is not finished yet — more sketches to be added soon!
romantic Ranze & Shun scenes
Five sketches of Ranze and Shun in various romantic situations and poses. I believe these are alternate designs for the cover of Ribon April 1987, the final Ranze arc cover which features Shun cradling Ranze in his arms.
"Fuyu no fantagic poster" furoku (Ribon Original winter 1984)
This is clearly a rough sketch for the furoku poster, which ultimately became a horizontal design with Shun/Jean sitting by the lakeside.
"Chō jumbo poster" furoku (May 1987)
I believe this is an alternate design for the furoku poster, which final design features Shun lying in the field of flowers rather than sitting by Ranze's side. Both designs feature a flower wreath.
Ranze Ribon cover sketches
I believe these are sketches for a Ribon cover illustration, although no art resembling these sketches was ever produced. The notebook in the left illustration says "Ranze Holmes", so Ranze is cosplaying as Sherlock Holmes.
Etō family
A stunning sketch of the Etō family revealing their monster forms. No art resembling this sketch was ever produced.
Yōko and Ranze
A sketch of Yōko and Ranze holding hands of unknown purpose. This somewhat resembles the chapter 38 title page, so perhaps when this sketch wasn't used for its original purpose Ikeno repurposed its basic design.
Shrine festival
Two variations on the theme of the Etō family and Shun going to a shrine festival. No art resembling these sketches was ever produced, but my guess is these are alternate designs for the "Tokudai summer pinup" furoku (August 1987) which final design features the characters in a restaurant under the sea.
non-Tokimeki covers
Two illustrations of non-Tokimeki characters with flowers, which I believe are alternative designs for the cover of Ribon Original early spring 1986.
"6-dai rensai illust gallery" furoku (June 1984) and unknown sketches
The right side of this paper features a sketch that is nearly identical to the finished furoku, while the left side features two unknown illustrations of Ranze which might be alternate designs for this furoku.
Ribon 1983 cover
I believe this is an alternate design for the cover of Ribon September 1983, which is an issue heavily featuring the Shun-Ranze-Tsutsui love triangle.
Ribon cover
This might be an alternate design for the cover of Ribon May 1984, which final version also features Ranze, Shun, and Yōko-dog.
Ribon cover
This is likely an alternate design for the cover of Ribon July 1985, which final version features Ranze and Yōko-dog sharing a parfait.
Ribon covers
These are likely alternate designs for the cover of Ribon February 1985, which final version features Ranze and Shun with ski wear.
Ribon cover
These is likely an alternate design for the cover of Ribon October 1984, which final version features Ranze and Shun holding baseball equiptment.
Ribon cover
This is likely an alternate design for the cover of Ribon September 1983, which final version features Ranze holding grapes.
ice cream, spring, tropical summer
These illustrations were never used, but my best guess is they were intended for some type of furoku, possibly a bag.
"Ranze & Yōko friendly bag" furoku (February 1985)
Six alternate illustrations for the furoku.
tree house, fire truck, laundry
Possibly designs for a furoku notebook cover.
Ribon techō furoku designs
Alternate designs for the 1986 and/or 1987 Ribon planner furoku.
"Ranze & Yōko card letter set" furoku (August 1986)
Three alternate designs for the furoku and a sketch of the final design.
"Tokimeki pop-up letter set" furoku (November 1989)
A design which was ultimately used for a Narumi arc letter set furoku.
painters
A sketch of unknown purpose, although perhaps it was an alternate design for the letter set design above.
house
A sketch of unknown purpose, although the shape suggests it's an alternate design for the "Musical rack" furoku (September 1983).
"Kisekae letter set" furoku (November 1986)
Alternate designs for the furoku.
Yōko transformations
A sketch of unknown purpose featuring Yōko as various animals.
notebook designs
Sketches for what I believe to be unused furoku notebook designs, including an alternate design for "Ranze daily life note" (September 1984).
